Hepatitis is a disease that causes inflammation of the liver. In many cases, it is caused by a viral infection, but hepatitis may also be caused by a severe bacterial infection or a number of toxins or medications. Another rare type of the disease is autoimmune hepatitis. Autoimmune hepatitis occurs when the body attacks its own liver cells. Hepatitis can be separated into two subgroups based on how long it lasts -- acute hepatitis (less than 6 months) and chronic hepatitis (more than 6 months).
