Drug Interactions With Boceprevir

CYP 3A4 Inducer Medications
The body breaks down boceprevir using enzymes in the liver known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Medications known as CYP 3A4 inducers can increase the activity of these enzymes. Thus, combining boceprevir with one of these drugs may decrease the level of boceprevir in your body, possibly making it less effective.

Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medicines together. Certain CYP 3A4 inducer medications (such as rifampin and St. John's wort) should not be taken with boceprevir.

CYP 3A4 Inhibitor Medications
The body breaks down boceprevir using enzymes in the liver known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Medications known as CYP 3A4 inhibitors can decrease the activity of these enzymes. Thus, combining boceprevir with one of these drugs may increase the level of boceprevir in your body, increasing your risk for side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medicines together.

Desipramine
Taking boceprevir with desipramine could increase the level of desipramine in your body, potentially increasing your risk for side effects, such as dizziness and low blood pressure. Your healthcare provider may need to give you a lower desipramine dosage during boceprevir treatment.

Digoxin
Boceprevir may increase levels of digoxin in the bloodstream. Your healthcare provider may decide to monitor your digoxin levels using a simple blood test, especially when you first start or stop taking boceprevir.

Ergot Medications
Boceprevir should not be combined with ergot medications. Taking these medications together can increase the level of ergot medications in your body, potentially increasing your risk for ergot toxicity.

Hormonal Birth Control
Taking boceprevir with birth control pills that contain drospirenone (a type of progestin) may increase the risk for dangerously high blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia). Boceprevir should not be taken with drospirenone. In addition, boceprevir may decrease blood levels of ethinyl estradiol, which could make birth control pills that contain estrogen less effective. Women taking boceprevir should use two forms of birth control, other than hormonal birth control.
