Engerix-B Uses

How Does Engerix-B Work?

This vaccine contains hepatitis B surface antigens, which are proteins on the outer surface of the virus that the immune system can recognize. Unlike older versions of the hepatitis vaccine, currently available vaccines (including Engerix-B) are not made using human blood products. Instead, they are made using recombinant DNA technology.
This product is not "live," which means that there is absolutely no chance that a person could get hepatitis B from this vaccine.
Simply stated, Engerix-B "tricks" the body into thinking it has been exposed to the hepatitis B virus. The body produces antibodies in response that will help fight infection if future exposure occurs.

Off-Label Uses for Engerix-B

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Engerix-B for something other than the purposes discussed in this article; this would be known as an "off-label" use. Using the pediatric formulation (intended for use in children and teens) for adults, or using the adult version for children and teens would be an off-label Engerix-B use. This type of use is likely to occur during times of vaccine shortages.
