Peginterferon Alfa-2a Dosage
With peginterferon alfa-2a, the dosing guidelines will depend on factors like your age, your weight, and how well you tolerate this medicine. The recommended amount for treating hepatitis B or C in adults is typically 180 mcg each week. Your doctor may recommend taking this drug once a week for 24 weeks or 48 weeks, depending on the type of hepatitis and various other factors.
An Introduction to Your Dosage of Peginterferon Alfa-2aThe dose of peginterferon alfa-2a (Pegasys®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on several factors, such as:
- Your age
- Your weight (and height for children)
- How well you tolerate the medication
- How well your kidneys are functioning.
As always, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Peginterferon Alfa-2a Dosing Guidelines for Hepatitis CThe recommended dose of peginterferon alfa-2a for treating hepatitis C in adults is 180 mcg each week for 24 or 48 weeks (depending on the type of hepatitis C), combined with ribavirin. For hepatitis C genotype 1 infection in adults, a hepatitis C protease inhibitor such as Incivek® or Victrelis® should also be added. If you cannot take ribavirin, the standard adult dosage is 180 mcg each week for 48 weeks, regardless of the type of hepatitis C. People who have HIV in addition to hepatitis C should use the medication for 48 weeks, regardless of which type of hepatitis C they have or whether they are also taking ribavirin.
For children, the healthcare provider will calculate an appropriate dose based on the child's body surface area, which is calculated using both height and weight, combined with ribavirin capsules or liquid twice a day. The usual length of treatment is 48 weeks.
Your healthcare provider may recommend a lower dosage if you develop dangerous peginterferon alfa-2a side effects or if you have kidney problems.
