Recombivax HB Uses

How Does Recombivax HB Work?

This vaccine contains hepatitis B surface antigens, which are proteins on the outer surface of the virus that the immune system recognized. Unlike older versions of the hepatitis vaccine, currently available vaccines, including Recombivax HB, are not made using human blood products. Instead, they are made using recombinant DNA technology.
This vaccine is not "live;" this means that there is absolutely no chance that a person could get hepatitis B from this product.
Simply stated, Recombivax HB "tricks" the body into thinking it has been exposed to the hepatitis B virus. The body produces antibodies in response that will help fight infection if future exposure occurs.

Off-Label Uses for Recombivax HB

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Recombivax HB for something other than the diseases discussed in this article (this would be known as an "off-label" use). Giving the pediatric Recombivax HB formulation (intended for use in children and teens) to adults would be an off-label Recombivax HB use. This is likely to occur during times of vaccine shortages, but is not recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
